A. There are large variations in skills, experience, background, and clinical outcomes among specialists treating similar medical conditions. For example, clinical studies have proven that there is large variation in survival and death rates among cardio-thoracic surgeons performing coronary bypass operations on patients with similar medical conditions. The “best” specialist will increase the probability that a patient will have a positive outcome.

Q. Will my personal physician direct me to the "best" specialist?
A. Maybe. Many primary care physicians choose specialists from a list provided by their medical group or insurance plan. Other doctors may choose specialists they are familiar with.
